About The Show

For the past 32 years in Central Alabama, Pat Patrick Promotions has presented THE BEST IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. From its first broadcast on WERC radio in 1985 to today, we strive to bring you quality, family-friendly football entertainment. The show is broadcast currently on WYDE FM 101.1 each Friday beginning at 7:00 pm.

Each week, we bring you a featured matchup between local high schools LIVE as it happens — something you won't find anywhere else in the area. The excitement of live Saturday college games and Monday night pro football can be experienced on the high school level, even if you are at work or at home.

THE BEST IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Game of the Week is hosted by Dave Ellis and Rex Short, with Rob Moxley, Mark Woods and "Papa" Durwood Freeman. The Pre-Game Tailgate Show is hosted by Pat Patrick, and The Post-Game Scoreboard Show is hosted by Mark Woods.

Producer / Pre-Game Tailgate Show Host

A graduate of Jones Valley High School, Pat Patrick began The Best in High School Football radio broadcasts in 1985 as part of a summer job between teaching English classes and coaching high school sports. Apart from his duties as Producer of the broadcasts, Pat hosts the Pre-Game Show, co-hosts the Post-Game Show, and generally helps the announcers be the best that they can be.

"If you surround yourself with winners, it helps you and your program to be a success."
- Pat Patrick

Statistician / Engineer / Official
Rex provides up-to-the-minute stats and coaching analysis to the pressbox team. Able to swtich-up between play-by-play and color commentary, this former Vestavia Rebel's flexibility makes him quite an asset. but he has been known to get under the skin of non-Rebel fans.

"No one loves the game of football more than Rex Short."
- Pat Patrick

Announcer Emeritus
Durwood Freeman graduated from Ensley High School. He lettered in baseball at Ensley. He served in the US Navy during World War II spending time in the South Pacific. He grew up in the Birmingham area and spent the majority of his early years in the credit operation. He met his wife Jo Ann, a secretary for an engineering firm for 32 years. They have been happily married for more than 65 years. They have 1 daughter, 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Durwood and Jo Ann are members of Bluff Park Methodist Church. Durwood has always been interested in sports and for the last 16 years has been associated with Pat Patricks Best in High School Football. The "handle" Papa Durwood is Pat's favorite sidekick. "Papa" Durwood brings a wealth of historical context to the show. A study of Birmingham's growth and evolution over the past 60 years, Papa is the voice of experience and authenticity in our broadcasts.

I attended Brooklane High School, graduated in 1994. I attended Jeff State and majored in Radio and TV Broadcasting. I have co-hosted several radio shows in Birmingham including the basketball showcase on WJOX and the College Football Wakeup Call on WAGG. This is my fifth year of working with Pat Patrick Promotions. I have worked on the sideline and in the booth on radio and TV broadcast. I have also worked on the scoreboard show the last 2 years. Since February I have been working on the Hit TV show "Livin it Up" with Chris Patrick.
